Endre Ivánka de Draskócz et Jordanföld (born September 24, 1902 in Budapest , † December 6, 1974 in Vienna ) was a Hungarian-Austrian classical philologist and Byzantine scholar .

Life

The son of a Hungarian nobility and in a sister of the poet Richard von Schaukal grew up in Vienna, where he at Schottengymnasium the Matura gained. First he studied theology at the University of Vienna and Rome for one year, then classical philology and the history of philosophy in Vienna. He received his doctorate in 1926 under Hans von Arnim with the dissertation The role of the practical in the philosophy of Aristotle presented on his theory of the state . He then took over the management of the family estate in Nógrád County , moved to Solymár near Budapest in 1932 and completed his habilitation in 1933 with Ákos von Pauler in Budapest for ancient philosophy. In 1940 he received an associate professor at the University Koloszvár ( Cluj ), where he worked until 1944 as a professor of Classics and Ancient History 1,941th After the Second World War he went back to Austria and initially took up a visiting professorship for Classical Philology at the University of Vienna; In 1947 he was appointed professor for classical philology at the University of Graz , and in 1961 as professor for Byzantine studies. In 1969 he retired.
