Josef Mesk

Josef Mesk (born May 31, 1869 in Alexandria , † November 4, 1946 in Graz ) was an Austrian classical philologist .

Mesk studied from 1890 to 1894 classical philology at the University of Vienna , where he received his doctorate in 1895 and in 1896 passed the teaching examination in Latin, Greek and German. He then worked as a teacher at various grammar schools, and from 1903 back in Vienna. In 1909 he was appointed associate professor for classical philology at the University of Graz and left school. In 1914 he moved to the University of Vienna as an associate professor. In 1917 he returned to Graz as a full professor, where he taught and researched until his retirement (1939). From 1939 to 1940 he represented his own chair.

In his research, Mesk dealt with both Greek and Latin literature. He wrote numerous articles (mostly in the journal Wiener Studien ) on Greek tragedy, rhetoric, Roman comedy, panegyric and Neronian literature.
