The Vienna Studies. Journal of Classical Philology and Patristic Studies and Latin Tradition is a traditional specialist journal in the field of classical studies . It is one of the oldest ancient philological journals in the German-speaking world.

The Vienna Studies are published by the Institute for Classical Philology, Middle and New Latin at the University of Vienna and by the Austrian Academy of Sciences , namely its subdivisions Commission for Ancient Literature and Latin Tradition and Commission for the Publication of the Corpus of Latin Church Fathers (CSEL) . Kurt Smolak currently acts as the personal editor in conjunction with Herbert Bannert , Georg Danek , Eugen Dönt , Christine Harrauer , Paul Lorenz , Hildegund Müller , Adolf Primmer , Christine Ratkowitsch , Franz Römer , Danuta Shanzer , Walter Stockert , Erich Woytek and Klaus Zelzer . Former editors of the magazine were Rudolf Hanslik , Walter Kraus , Adolf Primmer and Hans Schwabl .

It is distributed by the publishing house of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, initially at Böhlau-Verlag . It appears once a year and, in addition to articles, also contains reviews and brief advertisements, as well as an index covering each individual volume. For a long time appeared the magazine only with the subtitles journal of classical philology and later magazine of Classics and Patristics .

The first issue of the magazine founded by Wilhelm von Hartel and Karl Schenkl appeared in 1879. Up to number 60 (1942) the magazine appeared regularly, in the 1940s only irregularly due to the war, since number 42 (1948) again in uninterrupted order. In 1967, the actual number 80 started with a new count (new series). This count was maintained until 1986. In 1987, for the 100th volume, they reverted to the old count.
