Herbert Bannert

Herbert Bannert (* 1950 in Vienna ) is an Austrian classical philologist ( Graezist ).

Life

Herbert Bannert studied Classical Philology, Ancient History and Classical Archeology at the University of Vienna . He was at in 1973 Rudolf Hanslik specialist Classical Philology doctorate . After ten years as an assistant in Vienna, he achieved his habilitation in 1983 , thereby becoming a university lecturer and receiving the title of extraordinary university professor. In 2008 he was appointed director of the Institute for Classical Philology, Middle and New Latin at the University of Vienna. He retired in 2016.

Bannert's main research interests are the Homeric epics and the Greek tragedy . He published numerous monographs and articles. His most widespread works are Homer in Self-testimonies and Pictorial Documents (eight editions since 1979) and Reading Homer (2005).
