Walter Stockert

Walter Stockert (born September 25, 1940 in Vienna ) is an Austrian classical philologist .

Life and research

After graduating from high school in 1958, Stockert studied classical philology at the University of Vienna , where he received his doctorate in April 1963 with the dissertation “Word and Sound Parallels in Pindar ”. In November of the same year he passed the teaching examination for Latin and Greek and completed his probationary year at the Wasagasse grammar school (Vienna IX). Until September 2000 he was a teacher for Latin at the grammar school Vienna XIX of the Neulandschulsiedlungen.

From 1985 to 1986 Stockert was a Junior Fellow at the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, DC On December 18, 1990, he completed his habilitation with an edition including a commentary on Iphigenia in Aulis des Euripides at the University of Vienna and has since given lectures on Greek and Latin literature from. In the winter semester 1998/99 he was visiting professor at the University of Heidelberg .

Stockert deals with ancient drama, especially with the tragedian Euripides and the Latin comedy poet Plautus . He has published critical editions including commentaries on Euripides' Iphigenie in Aulis (1992) and Hippolytus (1994) as well as on the Plautus comedies Aulularia (1983) and Cistellaria (2012).
