Jannis Zotos

Jannis Zotos (first name also listed as Yannis or Giannis ; * 1958 in Dresden ) is a Greek-born musician, composer, arranger, music teacher and operator of the jazz club b-flat in Berlin.

Life

He studied classical guitar at the “Hanns Eisler” University of Music in Berlin , but also masters the playing of bouzouki and oud . He is particularly interested in rebetiko , music from Asia Minor and traditional Greek music. He was a member of the formation percussion & strings and founded the rebetiko band Zotos Kompania in 1990 together with his brother Thanassis Zotos . The Greek television ERT made a documentary about the band on a tour of Greece. In 1980 I met the Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis for the first time . A close artistic collaboration and personal friendship began. In addition there were joint projects with Barbara Thalheim , Maria Farantouri , George Dalaras , Petros Pandis and Dimitra Galani . Jannis Zotos has written film and theater music, orchestrated several Mikis Theodorakis albums and directed his orchestra, especially in the 1990s. He has participated in numerous recordings and published several of his own productions on CD. He teaches guitar at the "Bela Bartok" music school in Berlin Pankow and lives in Berlin.

Since the late 1990s, Zotos has increasingly occupied himself with writing his own songs. He sets Greek poetry and music to music in the ancient Greek tradition. a. by Giorgos Seferis, Kostas Karyotakis, Maria Polidouri, Jannis Ritsos, Mikis Theodorakis.
