Albert von Muchar , born as Anton Muchar von Bied and Rangfeld (born November 22, 1786 in Lienz ; † June 6, 1849 in Graz ), was a Benedictine and priest , librarian , archivist and historian , writer , doctor of philosophy and rector of Karl -Franzens University in Graz.

Life

Muchar was born in Lienz in Tyrol as the son of an imperial main taker . In his hometown, he spent his childhood, visited the school and the Franciscans run high school . In 1803 he moved to the Graz Lyceum and began his philological studies there.

On September 29, 1805 Anton Muchar was accepted into the novitiate by Gotthard Kugelmayr, the abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Admont at the time , and took the religious name Albert . He was now studying theology and, in addition to the classical and modern languages, dealt with the history of Styria. On October 16, 1808, he took his religious vows and was ordained a priest on October 1 of the following year .

In 1809 Muchar was appointed professor for the entire Bible study at the "Theological Institute" of the monastery and, after the re-establishment of the "Philosophical School" in Admont in 1810, also as a professor of Greek philology . In 1813 he was also appointed archivist and librarian of the Benedictine monastery and worked in this position without interruption until 1823. In that year Muchar was appointed to the theological department of the Graz Lyceum and in 1825 he took over the professorship for aesthetics and classical music Studies at the philosophical faculty of this school. After the re-establishment of the University of Graz in 1827, Muchar headed the Faculty of Philosophy as dean in the years 1827–1829 and was elected rector of the Karl-Franzens-University for the period 1842–1843.

Muchar, who was significantly involved in the creation of the Historical Association for Inner Austria in 1843 and who had an excellent reputation in the scholarly world of that time, was made a "real member" of the newly founded Academy of Sciences in 1847 by Emperor Ferdinand I. Vienna appointed.

When he moved in 1823, Muchar was entrusted by the abbot of the Admont Benedictine Abbey with the task of managing and administering the monastery in Graz as court master. At that time the Admonter Hof was an important trading center and a heavily frequented meeting point for the dominant personalities from church, politics, business and administration in the state capital. He also died at his long-term workplace, not yet 63 years old. Albert von Muchar, the "old master of Styrian regional history", was buried in the St. Peter cemetery in Graz, in an honorary grave of the Historical Association for Styria, of which he was once a co-founder.

Honor

There is a Muchargasse in both Graz and Lienz. There is a memorial plaque at the end of Grazer Muchargasse (house Körösistraße 18).
