National and University Library of Slovenia

The National and University Library ( Slovenian Narodna in univerzitetna knjižnica , NUK ) is the national library of Slovenia and the university library of the University of Ljubljana . It is also the largest academic library in the country. The story goes back to 1774.

The library building was planned by Jože Plečnik to replace the Auersperg Palace in the center of Ljubljana between 1930 and 1931 and built between 1936 and 1941.

The building was honored in 1992 with a picture on the back of the 500 tolar note, which was valid until the introduction of the euro in 2007 .
