Karlmann Tangl (born August 17, 1799 in Wolfsberg , † October 12, 1866 in Graz ) was an Austrian philologist and historian .

Life

After five years at the Stiftsgymnasium St. Paul, he moved to Klagenfurt in 1816 , where he completed the remainder of the grammar school and the philosophical studies. In 1820 he moved to Graz , from 1822 he was a high school teacher in Innsbruck . Already here he was interested in historical studies, but after completing his legal studies and doctorate in Padua as well as his marriage in 1832 he was appointed to the Lviv University of Applied Sciences, where he remained professor of aesthetics, classical literature and classical philology until 1851.

He then succeeded Albert Muchar as full professor of aesthetics and classical philology at the University of Graz , where he was rector in 1852 and 1858. As a member of the Historical Association for Styria from 1851, Tangl primarily conducted inner-Austrian historical research in his spare time , especially since he suffered greatly from Metternich's censorship measures in his main subject.

In 1863 he had to retire ailing after 40 years of service, three and a half years later he died in the middle of his historical work.
