Georg Rebhann Ritter von Aspernbruck (born April 7, 1824 in Vienna , † August 29, 1892 in Altaussee ) was an Austrian civil engineer , professor and rector of the Vienna University of Technology . Under his direction, the Aspern Bridge was built as a chain bridge over the Danube Canal from 1863 to 1864 .

Life

Georg Rebhann attended secondary school and then studied at the kk Polytechnisches Institut in Vienna with Adam von Burg , Johann Philipp Neumann and Simon Stampfer, among others . He also studied astronomy at the University of Vienna .

From 1843 to 1868 he was a civil servant in the State Building Service of the Ministry of the Interior. Initially he worked in the Gubernial building department in Lemberg . From 1850 he was an engineer assistant, in 1851 he became an engineer in the section for road, water and bridge construction of the General Building Department. In 1856 he became an engineer and in 1858 a senior engineer in the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Public Works. In 1868 Rebhann ended his state building work as a building officer. Among other things, the hydrotechnical Danube map Passau-Orsowa was created under his supervision.

In 1852 he completed his habilitation at the Polytechnic Institute for Building Mechanics, and in 1855 he received his doctorate at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen . In 1861 he became adjunct professor, in 1863 associate professor and in 1868 finally full professor for structural mechanics and theory of bridge construction at the Polytechnic Institute. Rebhann was dean of the civil engineering school in the academic years 1870/71, 1881/82 and 1884/85 to 1887/88. In the academic year 1882/83 he was elected rector of the Polytechnic Institute, which was converted into a technical college in 1872.

Rebhann wrote the two-volume standard work Higher Engineering . In 1871 he formulated the "Rebhann'schen sentence" about the earth pressure on retaining and lining walls .
