Achim Hettler , (born April 6, 1953 in Karlsruhe ) is a civil engineer for geotechnics and a university lecturer.

Life

Hettler spent his youth in Rastatt , where he first attended the local elementary school for four years. Then he switched to the humanistic Ludwig-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Rastatt, where he graduated from high school with a grade point average after eight years. He then took a degree in civil engineering at the TH Karlsruhe . A subsequent scholarship enabled him to study for two semesters at the Institut national des sciences appliquées de Lyon , one of five scientific Grande Écoles ("great schools") for the training of highly qualified engineers in France. After two further semesters at the TH Karlsruhe specializing in soil mechanics and rock mechanics with Gerd Gudehus , Hettler graduated in 1977 with an average grade; his degree earned him the Bilfinger & Berger Prize in 1978. This was followed by two more semesters as a postgraduate student in connection with half a scientific position at the Institute for Soil Mechanics and Rock Mechanics at the TU Karlsruhe. Hettler used this time to study mechanics in more depth. From 1978 to 1987 he was a research assistant, then a university assistant. During this time, Hettler's dissertation (1981) and habilitation (1986) fall.

As part of the construction site conference in 1988, Hettler was awarded the Carl Rappert Prize by the German Geotechnical Society for an investigation of pile safety on a statistical basis using the Bayesian method . As a board member, he is currently (2019) a member of the company's board.

He gained practical experience from 1987 to 1994 at Bilfinger & Berger Bau. In 1994 he followed Anton Weißenbach to the chair of "Building Ground Construction" at the University of Dortmund , which he held until October 2018, when he retired. In Dortmund, Hettler continued the previous research focus on " earth pressure , earth resistance, construction pit structures", which was also recognized by the outside world: he wrote the articles on earth pressure and (still with Weißenbach) on construction pits in the Grundbau-Taschenbuch (7th edition 2009) New edition of the handbook on excavation pits from Weißenbach with Theodoros Triantafyllidis and, as successor to Weißenbach, became chairman of the excavation work committee of the German Geotechnical Society (DGGT), whose recommendations (EAB) appeared under his leadership in the 5th edition in 2012 and which are also regularly in the Bautechnik magazine appear. In this context he is also on the board of DGGT. In addition, he continued to cultivate his previous areas of interest such as the remediation of contaminated sites, material laws , model laws and numerical modeling. He is a recognized expert for earthworks and foundations according to building code law and a publicly appointed and sworn expert for geotechnics, foundations, foundation damage and excavations at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry . He is also the editor of the magazines "Bautechnik" and "Geotechnik" from Ernst & Sohn .

In connection with the development of standards and recommendations, Hettler holds numerous other honorary positions. He is a member of the steering committee "Foundation engineering, geotechnics" in the building standards committee (NABau), deputy chairman in the calculation procedure committee, chairman in the sub-committee "Calculation of earth pressure" (DIN 4085), member of the European committee TC 250 / SC 7 / EG 10 " Calculation models ”and head of the“ Soil Mechanics Section ”at DGGT. In Germany, Hettler is considered to be a leader in the field of earth pressure research with publications in the journal “Bautechnik”, relevant articles in the Grundbau pocket book and a monograph on earth pressure. He is also the co-author of a book on building surveyors in court.

Hettler is married to the French artist Marie-Hélène Desrue and lives in Rastatt.
