Andreas Georg Kornhuber (born August 2, 1824 in Kematen near Grieskirchen , Upper Austria ; † April 21, 1905 in Vienna ) was an Austrian natural historian and university professor . He was rector of the Vienna University of Technology . Its botanical abbreviation is Kornh.

Life

Andreas Kornhuber studied at the Philosophical Faculty in Salzburg , where he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. At the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna he received his doctorate in 1850 for Dr. med. Josef Hyrtl and Stephan Ladislaus Endlicher were among his professors . He also completed a teaching degree, in 1851 he graduated after studying veterinary medicine with a master's degree in pharmacy.

After being employed as an adjunct at the Vienna Veterinary Institute (today's University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna ), he taught from 1852 to 1860 as a professor of natural history at the secondary school in Pressburg . From 1861 until his retirement in 1895 he was a full professor of zoology and botany at the Imperial and Royal Polytechnic Institute (from 1872 technical college). In the academic years 1871/72 and 1872/73 he was dean of the general department, in the academic year 1879/80 he was elected rector of the Vienna University of Technology . His students included Franz Toula and Anton Heimerl , assistants included Gustav von Hayek and Josef Emanuel Hibsch .

Kornhuber was one of the first to describe the flora and ecology in Seewinkel in Burgenland and published numerous works on Pressburg and the surrounding area. In addition, he did paleontological research in the field of extinct reptiles and first described the mosasaurs Carsosaurus marchesettii (1893) and Opetiosaurus bucchichi (also Aigialosaurus bucchichi , 1901) and the related Hydrosaurus lesinensis (today Pontosaurus lesinensis , 1873).

Kornhuber was appointed court advisor and, in 1901, an honorary member of the Zoological-Botanical Society . He died in 1905 at the age of 80, his grave is in Bratislava .
