Otto Guglia

Otto Franz Guglia (born September 22, 1904 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary , † April 29, 1984 in Vienna, Austria ) was an Austrian historian , geographer and naturalist .

Live and act

Otto Guglia was the son of Eugen Guglia . He attended in Vienna elementary school and the lower grades of high school , the graduation he put in Graz on where his father was appointed 1919th He then studied history and geography at the universities of Graz , Munich , Würzburg and Vienna . During these years of study he also attended legal and botanical lectures, for example with Karl Fritsch in Graz and with Richard Wettstein , August von Hayek and Friedrich Karl Max Vierhapper in Vienna. In 1927 he was in Vienna with the work The History Josephinian episcopal elections in the German Reich donors Basel and Chur to Dr. phil. PhD . He then worked in the Federal Ministry of Education , including from 1928 in the scientific archive and library service and later also in the university department. From 1941 he worked together with the German archivists Hans Branig , Heinz Buttkus, Eilhard Eilers, Heinz Göring, Hans Goetting and Roland Seeberg-Elverfeldt and the Sudeten German Rudolf Fitz in the archive administration of the Government General . He later became a prisoner of war in the United States .

In 1946 he began working again in the Federal Ministry of Education as head of the ministerial library. In 1952 he was promoted to senior state librarian, in 1961 he was given the professional title of Hofrat . In 1970 he retired and then worked as a freelancer in the cultural section of the Burgenland state government.

Otto Guglia dealt with history and geography, among other things, botany and entomology. Since he was a student in Graz, inspired by his teacher Robert Sieger , Burgenland has been the focus of his research. In 1925 he wrote the seminar paper Plant Geography of Burgenland , later further both botanical and geographical publications followed. He also wrote on other subjects. In 1954 he received a UNESCO award for his historical work, Kampf um Europa . He wrote biographical works on Giovanni Antonio Scopoli , Heinrich Friese and Pál Kitaibel .

In 1969 he became a corresponding member of the Austrian Pedagogical Society. In 1973 he was chairman of a committee with Gottfried Traxler, Stephan Aumüller and Franz Sauerzopf, which prepared a celebration of the Burgenland state government in honor of the Dutch scholar Carolus Clusius . From 1974 he was 1st Vice President of the international research association "Pro Clusio" based in Güssing .

Otto Guglia bequeathed his collection to the Illmitz Biological Station on Lake Neusiedl during his lifetime , and later it was transferred to the Burgenland State Museum .
