Heinrich Friese (biologist)

Heinrich Friedrich August Christian Karl Ludwig Friese (born May 4, 1860 in Schwerin ; † September 8, 1948 there ) was a German biologist and entomologist .

life and work

Heinrich Friese was born in 1860 as the son of the Mecklenburg organ builder Friedrich Friese (III.) And his wife Maria, née. Müller, born. He initially trained as an organ builder in his father's workshop, but then decided to study zoology, botany and physics (1886 to 1889).
The main focus of his research was entomology, and especially apiculture . As early as 1895 to 1901, he summarized the results of his research trips, including to Spain, France and Hungary, in his six-volume work The European Bees .

In 1907 Friese received an honorary doctorate from the Justus Liebig University in Giessen . From 1919 to 1934 he headed the biology department at the Schwerin State Health Office.
He died in Schwerin in 1948.

The bee genus Eufriesea is named in his honor.
