Frank Strobel (* 1966 in Munich ) is a German conductor who is known for premieres and re-performances of works by the composers Sergei Prokofiev , Franz Schreker and Siegfried Wagner . He is the authorized editor and editor of works by the composer Alfred Schnittke and has helped this composer to achieve a reputation as a film composer in German-speaking countries since 2001. In addition, Strobel has been doing pioneering work in the interdisciplinary area of ​​film and music for years and is one of the protagonists of the film in concert movement.

Growing up near his parents' cinema , Strobel came into contact with music at an early age. He learned the Filmvorführen and developed a close relationship with the films and thus also to film music . He eventually became a musician and later became a conductor.

He had a special artistic relationship with Alfred Schnittke until his death, which is reflected in numerous premieres and CD recordings with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin (RSB). In 1992 he conducted Alfred and Andrej Schnittke's music for the silent film The Last Days of St. Petersburg at the Alte Oper in Frankfurt under the eyes of ZDF viewers . In 1993 he played Schnittke's composition for Yuri Karas Mikhail Bulgakov's adaptation of Meister and Margarita with the Moscow Philharmonic and the premiere of concerto grosso No. 5 with the Russian National Orchestra . For Deutschlandradio and ZDF / Arte he led a. a. 1997 the recording and the Frankfurt premiere of the 130-minute film music for large orchestra for Die Generallinie ( Sergej Eisenstein / music: Taras Bujevski) with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra.

Until 1998 he was chief conductor of the Babelsberg Film Orchestra . He has headed the European Film Philharmonic since 2000 and is also artistic advisor to the silent film program of ZDF / ARTE .

In the years after 2000, he and the RSB recorded some of Schnittke's pieces that he had edited at his request and thus presented to the public for the first time. In 2003 and 2004 he had great success in Berlin and Moscow with the concert for the film Alexander Newski with the music of Sergei Prokofjew , which he performed again with the RSB. Here, too, it was a world premiere arranged by Strobel. He reconstructed the original score and put it together again. For this he received the highest civilian award in Russia in November 2004 in the Bolschoitheater in Moscow .

In 2006 the film Rosenkavalier to the music of Richard Strauss - played by the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden - was shown again under the direction of Strobel. After his work on original music and the creation of new music, 40 silent film classics were set to music, shone in new splendor in concert halls and cinemas under his direction and are enjoying great interest, especially due to the broadcasts on the TV channels ZDF, Arte, SDR , SR and 3sat , who recorded most of the events in cooperation with DeutschlandRadio Berlin . His conducting the RSB at the world premiere of the reconstructed version of Metropolis on February 12, 2012 in Berlin's Friedrichstadtpalast , where he also commissioned Fritz Lang's film The tired death in the digitally restored version with the new one from ZDF / ARTE, received excellent media coverage Film music by Cornelius Schwehr premiered.

Frank Strobel also works for new cinema and television films and conducts leading European orchestras, for example from the United Kingdom and the United States , and is also active in radio and record publications. The film concerts of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra in the Laeiszhalle under Strobel, with which he is currently on tour in Germany under the banner of the private radio station Klassikradio, are legendary . Strobel is a globetrotter who has meanwhile traveled all over Europe, parts of North, Central and South America and Asia through his music.

Frank Strobel lives in Berlin today.
