Karl Fritsch

Karl Fritsch (born February 24, 1864 in Vienna , † January 17, 1934 in Graz ) was an Austrian botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Fritsch ".

Life

Karl Fritsch was the son of the meteorologist Karl Fritsch . He began to study natural sciences at the University of Innsbruck and then moved to the University of Vienna in the same subject . In 1886 he was able to successfully complete this course with a doctorate (Dr. phil.). Immediately afterwards he got a job as a volunteer in the botanical department of the Natural History Museum Vienna . In 1890 Fritsch was appointed to the demonstrator at the Plant Physiological Institute of the University of Vienna, where he was able to present his habilitation that same year .

From 1892 Fritsch worked as an adjunct at the Botanical Garden and in 1896 was appointed "extraordinary professor". Four years later he accepted a position as "Professor of Systematic Botany" at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz . There he was also promoted to "full professor" in 1905. As such, he was instrumental in the restructuring of the botanical laboratory into a modern institute. In 1910 he was entrusted with the management of the botanical garden in Graz .

Fritsch's extensive research focused particularly on systematic studies of the flora of Austria , as well as on the Gesneriaceae plant family and the structure of the monocotyledons . Research on fungi and myxomycetes also formed his constant interest.

Honors

In his honor, the Institute of Botany founded a series of journals in 1994 and named Fritschiana . She continues Professor Josef Pölt's Schedae notebooks and deals with the research on the institute's botanical collection . The spectrum has since been expanded to include floristic and taxonomic work and currently comprises 131 booklets. Fritsch also the plant species are Fritschiantha Kuntze and Carolofritschia Engl. From the family of Gesneriad (Gesneriaceae) named.
