Bernhard Kirsch (around 1900)

Life

Bernhard Kirsch completed a degree in civil engineering at the Technical University of Dresden , where he passed the teaching examination for technical sciences in 1878. After completing his studies, he worked as an engineer at Harkort in Duisburg, then as a teacher for mechanics and iron construction at the building trade school in Dresden and as an assistant in the laboratory for material testing at the Technical University of Berlin-Charlottenburg .

From 1888 to 1905 he was employed at the Technological Trade Museum in Vienna, where he set up the research institute for building and machine materials. In 1905 he was appointed to succeed Ludwig von Tetmajer as a full professor of technical mechanics and building materials science at the Vienna University of Technology, where he remained until his retirement in 1923. In the academic year 1916/17 he was dean of the engineering school, and in the academic year 1917/18 he was elected rector of the Vienna University of Technology .

In 1907 he initiated the establishment of the Austrian Association for Material Testing, of which he was also a board member. In 1921 he was appointed councilor . Kirsch died in 1931 at the age of 77.
