Karl Freiherr von Smola (born November 15, 1802 in Budweis , † February 14, 1862 in Graz ) was an Austrian officer .

Life

Karl von Smola attended the Theresian Knight Academy in Vienna and joined the Bombardier Corps in 1817, like his father Josef von Smola . In 1819 he was already a lieutenant in the field artillery regiment 2. In 1827 he was promoted to first lieutenant and in 1829 adjutant to the later Feldzeugmeister Latour . Its tasks lay in descriptions of the country and work on war history.

In 1840 he became a major and in 1847 a lieutenant colonel and in July 1848 a colonel . In 1848 he took part in the campaign in Inner Austria as chief of staff under Feldzeugmeister Nugent . During the surrender of the city of Udine , he was seriously injured as a parliamentarian because he was shot in the leg despite the flag, which subsequently had to be amputated. In 1849 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Maria Theresa Order .

As an invalid officer he was assigned to the general quartermaster's staff for journalistic work in December 1848, and in 1852 he took over a professorship for army organization and military geography at the kuk war school . From 1853 to 1858 he was director of the Polytechnic Institute in Vienna. He retired in 1858 with the character of major general . He is buried in the St. Leonhard Cemetery in Graz .
