Leo Kirste

Leo Emil Eduard Kirste (born March 8, 1892 in Vienna ; † April 22, 1965 ibid) was an Austrian aircraft designer and university professor . He was rector of the Vienna University of Technology .

Life

Leo Kirste studied mechanical engineering at the technical universities in Graz and Vienna from 1910 to 1919 , where he passed the second state examination. From 1913 Kirste worked as a designer for the aircraft companies Breguet in London-Willesden , Rumpler in Berlin-Johannisthal and Phönix Flugzeugwerke in Vienna. In 1919 he became Richard Knoller's assistant at the Institute for Airship and Automotive Engineering at the Technical University of Vienna. From 1922 to 1937 he worked as chief designer at Blériot Aéronautique in Paris, where he developed new types of aircraft such as the Blériot 125 and the Blériot 127 and helped to develop and introduce new processes such as blind riveting based on the Chobert system. At the University of Paris , he received his doctorate in 1928 with a dissertation on the magnifying problem of aircraft to Dr. phil. In 1932 he received the degree of Engineer Civil de ľAéronautique with a thesis on balanced control surfaces.

In 1937 he was appointed full professor at the Vienna University of Technology, but was forced into retirement in 1938. During the Second World War he worked for Waagner-Biro . After the war he returned to the Technical University and from 1945 built the Institute for Lightweight Construction. In the academic year 1947/48 he was elected rector of the Vienna University of Technology . In 1948, together with Otto Lazar, he founded the Documentation Center for Technology and Economics at the library of the Vienna University of Technology .

Kirste received an honorary doctorate from the University of Lyon . He died in 1965 at the age of 73. His father was the Indologist Johann Kirste (1851–1920).

In 1970 the Kirsteweg in Vienna's 10th district of Favoriten was named after him.

The main focus of his work was the development of a rigidity method for the calculation of frameworks , investigations into the developable deformation of thin-walled circular cylinders and the optimization of structures.
