Enrico Giaccone was a works driver for Fiat based in his hometown of Turin. On April 2, 1922 , he finished fifth overall at the Targa Florio in Sicily on a 1.5-liter Fiat-802/403 . After four laps on the 108 km long Medio circuito delle Madonie and a race time of 7: 11.23.2 hours, he was 20.33.0 minutes behind the winner Giulio Masetti in a 4.5-liter Mercedes - 115- PS Grand Prix racing car .

On September 3, 1922, he took second place at the II Gran Premio delle Vetturette on the Monza high-speed railway behind his Fiat colleague Pietro Bordino and ahead of Evasio Lampiano and Carlo Salamano and was thus involved in the fourfold success of the 502 SS factory car. A week later, due to technical problems with his Fiat 804 , he could n't get away from the start at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza and retired.

The following season , on July 2, at the French Grand Prix with the new 805/405, after 16 of the planned 35 laps, he suffered an engine failure, which also led to failure.

Deadly accident

Enrico Giaccone had a fatal accident on August 26, 1923 during test drives in Monza. The Fiat team had come to Monza with two last year's Grand Prix cars of the type 804 and the drivers Giaccone, Salamano, Bordino and his mechanic Ambrogio Bruno to compete for the Italian Grand Prix scheduled for September 9th , which is also the Grand Prix of Europe was to test. Above all, the exact fuel consumption under racing conditions should be determined.

All four pilots took turns as drivers and co-drivers. Giaccone completed a few laps with Salamano at his side, then changed cars and rode with Bordino. Shortly after 12:30 p.m., after a short stop, the two went on a quick five-round turn. When approaching the Curva nord alta velocità of the oval course called Sopraelevata , a part of the chassis broke on Bordino's car, so that he lost a wheel. Bordino lost control of the vehicle at around 140 km / h, which slipped over the runway, almost fell into the underpass and caught fire. Salamano, who was sitting in the box and watching his teammates, saw the column of smoke from the burning car. He and a mechanic set out in a service vehicle to provide first aid . When they got to the scene of the accident, they found Giaccone conscious. Bordino had chest injuries and a broken wrist. They brought the two pilots to Ospedale Umberto I in Monza, where Enrico Giaccone died shortly after their arrival.

Enrico Giaccone was 33 years old. He left behind his wife Gina. The funeral took place with great sympathy. Among the mourners were Giovanni Agnelli and other high-ranking representatives of the Fiat group.

Enrico Giaccone was the third of three Fiat factory drivers who had a fatal accident with the 804 within just 13 months. On July 15, 1922 died Biagio Nazzaro in a racing accident at the French Grand Prix and two months before Giaccones death accident Evasio Lampiano the mountain race Course de Côte de la Faucille on Faucille in Gex in Switzerland .

After much deliberation, Fiat decided to let the team compete in the Italian Grand Prix. Despite his broken wrist, Bordino started. He took the lead and turned the fastest lap of the race , although he only drove with one arm and his co-driver Bruno changed gears for him. However, he had to give up exhausted after 45 of the 80 laps. Carlo Salamano and Felice Nazzaro then celebrated a double victory for Fiat. The race was overshadowed by another fatal incident. On September 8, the Alfa Romeo factory driver Ugo Sivocci had a fatal accident.
