Felice Nazzaro (born December 4, 1881 in Turin , † March 21, 1940 ibid) was an Italian racing driver .

Life

The son of a coal merchant from Turin came to the Fiat automobile works at the age of 15 , where he initially worked as a mechanic. His technical skill and flair for automobiles meant that he soon started in car races for the Italians. In 1901 he won the Piombino – Livorno race in Italy. In collaboration with Vincenzo Lancia , who was also working for Fiat at the time, he became one of the best European racing drivers from 1905. He came into the spotlight when he finished second in the 1906 French Grand Prix after a tough duel with the Hungarian Ferenc Szisz in a Renault .

Nazzaro dominated the 1907 Grand Prix season with victories at the French Grand Prix, the Kaiserpreis races in Germany and the Targa Florio . Technical defects prevented further success in 1908 such as B. on the Prinz-Heinrich-Fahrt .

In the following years he tried, like his mentor Lancia, to stand on his own two feet. He founded the automobile company Automobili Nazzaro and piloted his own vehicles in numerous races for advertising purposes. Except for winning the Targa Florio in 1913, he was barely successful.

In 1916 he left the Nazzaro company and returned to Fiat. For this brand he got behind the wheel of a racing car and was able to win the French Grand Prix in 1922 - 15 years after his first major success. However, this was marred by the accidental death of his nephew Biagio . After several failures in subsequent races, he ended his motorsport career in 1925.

Felice Nazzaro worked in Fiat's racing department until his death in 1940.
