Ferdinando Minoia
Ferdinando "Nando" Minoia (born June 2, 1884 in Milan ; † June 28, 1940 there ) was an Italian automobile racing driver who achieved significant successes in his remarkably long career.
Career
In 1907 Minoia had the first great success in his career when he won the Coppa Florio in an Isotta Fraschini . He covered the 486 kilometers of the course around Brescia in 4 hours and 39 minutes and won prize money of 50,000 lira . Subsequently, however, Minoia was initially unsuccessful, although he took part in various races. After finishing 25th in the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1925 , he finished fourth in the same race in 1926 . His racing car was the Officine Meccaniche . In the same year he drove the fastest race lap at the German Grand Prix in an OM 665 Superba with 161.2 km / h .
In 1923 Minoia became well known because he was the first driver ever to drive a mid-engined racing car , the Benz teardrop car . In 1927 he was able to win the first Mille Miglia together with Giuseppe Morandi in a racing time of 21 hours, 4 minutes and 48 seconds.
In 1931 the international umbrella organization of the automobile, the AIACR ( Association Internationale des Automobile Clubs Reconnus ), awarded the European Champion award . This went to the overall winner of the Grand Prix in Italy , France and Belgium . The title of European Champion at the time is roughly equivalent to today's Formula 1 world title. Minoia was the first racing driver to win this title in 1931 without winning a single Grand Prix. With his Alfa Romeo he only narrowly prevailed against his Alfa teammate Giuseppe Campari .
Minoia died in his hometown of Milan in 1940 at the age of 56.
