Giuseppe Campari
Giuseppe Campari (born June 8, 1892 in Lodi , † September 10, 1933 in Monza ) was an Italian racing driver .
Career
Giuseppe Campari started working in the Alfa Romeo car factory as a teenager . In the Sturm und Drang era of automotive engineering, he quickly rose to become the test driver for the Milan company's road vehicles . His interest in vehicles and his skills in handling heavy machinery opened the door to motorsport for him. First used in hill climbs, Alfa Romeo sent the 21-year-old to Sicily in 1914 to contest the Targa Florio there. The newcomer was able to meet the expectations placed in him and achieved an astonishing fourth place in the overall ranking. With the outbreak of the First World War , however, Campari's young career ended abruptly for the time being.
After the end of the war, Campari returned to Alfa Romeo and won the Circuito del Mugello in 1920 , albeit on a circuit that is not identical to today's racetrack . He was able to repeat this success in 1921 and he also came third in the Targa Florio . Campari was next to Antonio Ascari the top driver of Alfa Romeo and rose to the number one driver in the factory team of Milan in 1925 after his compatriot had a fatal accident at the French Grand Prix .
In Italy, Campari became a popular hero with his victories at the Coppa Acerbo and the Mille Miglia in the late 1920s. He won the Coppa Acerbo in 1927 , 1928 and again in 1931 . He won the Mille Miglia in two consecutive years, 1928 and 1929 .
For the 1930 season , Tazio Nuvolari joined the Alfa Romeo team, which was now led by Enzo Ferrari and started under the name Scuderia Ferrari . In 1931 the two Italians celebrated a much acclaimed victory at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza on an 8C 2300 and ended Bugatti's supremacy in this race with their triumph .
In 1933 Campari moved to Maserati and became a teammate of Borzacchini and Fagioli . In June he won the French Grand Prix in Montlhéry for the Bolognese in a Maserati 8C-3000 . Campari's career ended tragically at the Gran Premio di Monza on September 10, 1933 . He had a fatal accident while in the lead in a Scuderia Ferrari Alfa Romeo Tipo B when his car skidded on an oil spill and crashed into the lane. The following Borzacchini could no longer avoid the wreck and died after a violent collision also at the scene of the accident. In the third run there was another fatal accident, which killed the Polish racing driver Stanisław Czaykowski .
In addition to automobile racing, Campari had two great passions. He cooked excellently and was known among the racing drivers as a great gourmet . Campari was also an excellent singer. Equipped with a strong baritone , he trained as an opera singer during his motorsport career .
