Ivor Léon John Bueb (born June 6, 1923 in Dulwich ; † August 1, 1959 in Clermont-Ferrand , France ) was a British automobile racing driver who won the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1955 and 1957 .
Career
Like almost all British drivers, Ivor Bueb began his motor racing career in the 500 cc Formula 3 scene. The stocky Londoner was only able to achieve success in Formula 3 when he started with Cooper vehicles. Bueb drove such good races that he was promoted to the Cooper works team in 1955.
Bueb continued to compete in Formula 3, but he had most of his missions in the small 1100 cc sports car. Since Cooper did not have a victorious car for the endurance race at Le Mans, Bueb accepted an offer from Jaguar to drive their Jaguar D-Type on the Sarthe. Although Bueb was not involved in the accident, his name is also closely linked to the most serious accident in motorsport history. The trigger was Bueb's team-mate, Mike Hawthorn, who overtook Lance Macklin's slower Austin-Healey on the left, suddenly pulled to the right and braked hard to make a pit stop. The "cut" Macklin had to swerve to the left, where the French Mercedes driver Pierre Levegh approached at high speed and could no longer react. The Mercedes flew into the audience, 83 of them were killed. Mercedes race director Alfred Neubauer withdrew the Mercedes team, but the Jaguars continued to drive. After 24 hours, Hawthorn and Bueb were waved off as winners.
In the 1950s, Bueb drove almost anything that had four wheels. In 1956 he won the Reims 12-hour race with Duncan Hamilton . In 1957 he repeated his victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, again with a Jaguar D-Type. This time his partner was Ron Flockhart .
In the Formula 1 Bueb 1957 came as a factory driver for Connaught . He made his debut at the Monaco race . By 1959 he was able to qualify five times for a World Cup Grand Prix, he did not score any points.
In 1959 he drove for Lister in the World Sports Car Championship . In Formula 1 he got a contract with BRP and also started in Formula 2 with their Cooper T51 -Borgward . But like so many in the 1950s, Bueb lost his life on the racetrack. He had a serious accident on July 26, 1959 at the Auvergne Trophy in Clermont-Ferrand and died five days later in a local hospital.
