Maurice "Mauri" Rose (born May 26, 1906 in Columbus , Georgia , † January 1, 1981 in Royal Oak , Michigan ) was an American racing driver .

Career

Mauri Rose started his career between 1932 and 1951 in 36 races of the AAA National Series, of which he won six. In 1936 he won the title of the series.

Between 1933 and 1951 he competed 15 times in the Indianapolis 500 and won the race three times. This makes him one of the most successful participants in this race. In 1941 he had to share the victory with Floyd Davis after he had retired with his original car after 60 laps with an engine failure. After that, he took the car from Davis and drove it to victory.

In 1947 he succeeded in victory, u. a. because his teammate, Bill Holland , who was lying in front of him, assumed that Rose was one lap behind and let him pass. In 1948 he won for the third time - again before Holland. In 1950 he was able to place third. After the race of 1951 , in which he was eliminated due to an accident, he retired from racing. Since the Indy 500 was part of the drivers' world championship from 1950 to 1960 , Rose also had two Grand Prix starts and four world championship points.

After his career worked as an engineer with General Motors and developed a. a. a device with which amputees could drive cars again.
