Manuel Ayulo (born October 20, 1921 in Burbank (Los Angeles County) , California , † May 16, 1955 in Indianapolis , Indiana ) was an American racing driver .

Career

In addition to a successful career as a midget car driver, Manuel Ayulo competed in 44 races for the AAA National Series between 1948 and 1955 . In 1954 he won two races in Darlington and the Milwaukee Mile . In the championship he took second place.

Ayulo competed four times in the Indianapolis 500. In 1949 in a Bromme - Offenhauser and in 1953 in a Kuzma- Offenhauser, he failed due to a technical defect, in 1952 he was 20th in a Lesovsky- Offenhauser, in 1954 in a Kurtis Kraft he was 13th but in 1951  - a race for which he was originally not qualified when he took over the Kurtis Kraft from Jack McGrath halfway through the race and drove him to third place.

At the last qualifying weekend for the Indy 500 in 1955, Manuel Ayulo had a fatal accident. His car was thrown into a concrete wall. Ayulo was - which was already possible in Indianapolis at the time - not wearing seat belts and his pockets were full of wrenches, which contributed to his fatal injuries.

Since the 500 miles from Indianapolis were part of the drivers' world championship from 1950 to 1960, his statistics also include four Grand Prix starts.
