Clarence "Chet" Miller (born July 19, 1902 in Detroit , † May 15, 1953 in Indianapolis ) was an American racing driver .
Career
Chet Miller started 16 times in his career in the Indianapolis 500 . In addition, he failed to qualify in 1928 , 1950 and 1951 . He achieved his best result in 1938 when he took third place in a Summers FD - Offenhauser . At most other starts he had to give up prematurely or gave his car to another driver, which was allowed at the time.
In 1952 he drove the fastest lap in training with an average speed of almost 224 km / h, but due to the completely different allocation mode for the starting positions, he had to start the race from the ninth row. Although he covered a total of almost 2,000 laps at his starts, he was never in the lead.
Since the race in Indianapolis was part of the drivers' world championship from 1950 to 1960 , he also has two Grand Prix starts in the statistics.
He died in 1953 while training for the Indianapolis 500.
