Henry Banks (born June 14, 1913 in Croydon , Surrey , Great Britain , † December 18, 1994 in Indianapolis , Indiana , USA ) was an American racing driver of British origin.
Career
Banks was born in England but grew up in Royal Oak , Michigan . He drove numerous midget car races and also took part in 43 races of the AAA National Series between 1936 and 1953 . Although he managed only one victory there (1950 in Detroit ), thanks to his reliability he also won the championship in the same year.
He started five times in his career in the Indianapolis 500 . He achieved his best placement in 1951 with a sixth place in a Moore - Offenhauser . Six times he failed to qualify for the race, but three times during the race he took over another driver's car, which was allowed at the time. Since the race was part of the world championship between 1950 and 1960, there are also three Grand Prix starts for him.
After retiring as a driver, Banks served as USAC Director for many years .
