Local Government Areas in the Northern Territory
Structure since July 2008
In the Australian federal territory of the Northern Territory , a reorganization of the regional division came into force on July 1, 2008. After that there will only be 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs), of which 5 are municipalities and 11 are shires . In addition, there are five mostly scattered Unincorporated Areas (roughly unincorporated areas ) that do not belong to any LGA, but which only account for 1.45 percent of the total area (19,428 km²) with four percent of the population.
