Coordinates: 19 ° 39 ′ S , 134 ° 12 ′ E The Barkly Region is a Local Government Area (LGA) in the Northern Territory of Australia . The administrative seat of the region is Tennant Creek . The Barkly Region covers 322,513 km², making itthe second largest LGA in Australiaafter the East Pilbara Shire . It has 6655 inhabitants (2016) and belongs to the Barkly Tableland region.
history
In October 2006 the government decided the Northern Territy the administrative units ( local government areas ) to reform. The aim of the reform was to improve and expand public services in cities and municipalities. Eleven new Shires were formed on July 1, 2008 . On January 1, 2014, the Barkly Shire was renamed the Barkly Region .

The Barkly Region is divided into four wards , which are ruled by a President (Mayor) and twelve City Council members:
- Alyawarr Ward (south)
- Patta Ward (West)
- Kuwarrangu (until 2016 Yapakurlangu) (northeast)
- Alpururrulam Ward (southeast)
