Gerald F. "Jerry" Hoyt (born January 29, 1929 in Chicago , Illinois , † July 10, 1955 in Oklahoma City , Oklahoma ) was an American racing driver .

Career

Hoyt drove in 19 races in the AAA National Series in the 1950s . He achieved his best result in 1953 on the Milwaukee Mile as third.

He has also competed in the Indianapolis 500 four times . His greatest success here was pole position in 1955 . In the race, however, as in previous years, he had to give up prematurely after technical defects. In 1954 he drove Russo's car across the finish line in eighth place.

Since the Indianapolis 500 was part of the Formula 1 world championship from 1950 to 1960 , Hoyt also competed in four world championship races. However, he could not achieve points for the drivers' championship.

Hoyt was killed in a sprint car race in Oklahoma City in the summer of 1955.
