Changes in 2021
stretch
The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix is to be held for the first time in 2021 . A night race on a street circuit in Jeddah is planned for this. Also included in the published calendar is the Dutch Grand Prix at Circuit Park Zandvoort , which was already scheduled for 2020 but has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic . It was the first time since 1985 . After it was first announced that the Brazilian Grand Prix would no longer take place in Interlagos , but on a newly built racetrack in Rio de Janeiro , Interlagos was confirmed in the provisional racing calendar. This will henceforth be held under the name of the São Paulo Grand Prix . Also new to the calendar is the Qatar Grand Prix , which will be held for the first time at the Losail International Circuit in Doha .
The races in the Mugello and on the Nürburgring, which were added to the calendar at short notice in the preseason due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will no longer apply . The Australian Grand Prix at the Albert Park Circuit , the Canadian Grand Prix at the Gilles-Villeneuve Circuit , the Singapore Grand Prix at the Marina Bay Street Circuit and the Japanese Grand Prix at the Suzuka International Racing Course were at the start of the Planned for the season, but were canceled again in the course of the year. As in the previous season, the Styrian Grand Prix will be held on the Red Bull Ring and the Turkish Grand Prix on the Istanbul Park Circuit instead .
Technical regulations
The minimum weight of the vehicles has been increased by six kilograms to 752 kg and the minimum weight of the drive unit from 145 kg to 150 kg. The dual-axis steering introduced by Mercedes in the preseason has been banned since the beginning of the 2021 season.
The maximum permitted width of the underbody in the area in front of the rear tires has been reduced, and the underbody may only bend by eight millimeters instead of ten millimeters if it is subjected to a load of 500 Newton meters . In addition, the maximum permitted height of the vertical struts on the diffuser has been reduced by 50 millimeters. In the lower area, the brake ventilations may only have devices for guiding air with a maximum width of 80 millimeters. These measures are intended to reduce the pressure on the vehicles by up to ten percent.
For the first time, natural fibers such as bamboo , cotton , hemp and linen can be used as an alternative to carbon fiber reinforced plastic in vehicles.
In addition, it was stipulated that parts of competitors may only be reproduced with the help of information that is available to all participants. The use of stereo photogrammetry or 3D scanners to perform reverse engineering is prohibited.
Sporting regulations
The maximum duration of the race will be reduced from four to three hours in 2021. The two free practice sessions on each Friday will be shortened from 90 to 60 minutes.
In the run-up to the Portuguese Grand Prix , it was announced that a so-called sprint qualifying will be carried out on a trial basis on a total of three race weekends of the season . Only one hour of free practice will take place on Friday before qualifying will take place in the usual mode on the same day. The qualifying determines the starting order for the sprint race on Saturday over a distance of 100 km, which is to be completed without a mandatory pit stop. A second free practice session should take place on the Saturday morning before the sprint race. The placement of the sprint race determines the starting grid for the Grand Prix on Sunday. The top three winners in the sprint race will also receive World Championship points for the drivers 'and constructors' rankings: three points for the winner, two points for the runner-up and one point for the third-placed.
tires
Since the rule changes originally planned for 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic will not apply until 2022 , the introduction of 18-inch wheels planned for this season has also been postponed. This means that the 13-inch wheels will be used for another season. However, new tire compounds are used.
Teams
Racing Point will compete in the Formula 1 World Championship under the name Aston Martin F1 Team from 2021 . Renault announced in September 2020 that it would start as the Alpine F1 Team from 2021 .
Engine manufacturer
After three years with drive units from Honda and Renault, McLaren will be supplied with Mercedes engines again , as was the case between 1995 and 2014 . Renault no longer has any customer teams.
driver
Sebastian Vettel moved to the Aston Martin F1 Team after six years at Ferrari . His successor at Ferrari was Carlos Sainz jr . The place vacated by Sainz's departure from McLaren was taken over by Daniel Ricciardo , who left Renault after two years. Fernando Alonso , who last drove for McLaren in Formula 1 in 2018 and is starting for the team for the third time in his career, took over his cockpit .
Despite the contract that was originally endowed until 2022, Sergio Pérez left Racing Point at the end of 2020. In 2021 he will drive for Red Bull Racing as the successor to Alexander Albon . He became the test and substitute driver for the team and also at AlphaTauri . Haas parted ways with his previous regular drivers Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen after the 2020 season . They will be replaced by Formula 1 debutants Nikita Masepin and Mick Schumacher . Grosjean was hired by Mercedes for one-time test drives, which were supposed to take place as part of the French Grand Prix, but had to be canceled due to its postponement and the applicable entry regulations. Yuki Tsunoda drives instead of Daniil Kwjat for AlphaTauri and will also make his debut in the Formula 1 World Championship. For his part, Kwjat will be a test and reserve driver at Alpine.
Nico Hülkenberg , who took part in three races for Racing Point in 2020, will be a replacement and development driver at Aston Martin from 2021. In individual races he also takes on the role of substitute driver at Mercedes . On the race weekend of the Dutch Grand Prix , Kimi Räikkönen tested positive for COVID-19, he was represented by substitute driver Robert Kubica for this race and the Italian Grand Prix .
Others
The Safety Car and Medical Car , which have been provided by Mercedes-Benz since 1996 , are provided by Aston Martin in twelve races of the season . An Aston Martin Vantage will be used as the safety car and an Aston Martin DBX as the medical car . Aston Martin can determine at which Grands Prix the cars are to be used. Mercedes-Benz vehicles will continue to be used in the remaining races. While the colors of these cars have changed to red (Mercedes) or green (Aston Martin) this season, the respective drivers Bernd Mayländer and Alan van der Merwe will remain.
In December 2020, the International Court of Justice for Sports (CAS ) ruled that Russian athletes are not allowed to participate in the Olympic Games and World Championships under the flag and anthem of their country until December 16, 2022; accordingly, these will not be used in the placements of Russian drivers and at the event in Russia.
