The Racing Point F1 Team ( Racing Point for short ) is a British- licensed Formula 1 racing team based in Silverstone, England . The team was formed in August 2018 and was registered as the Racing Point Force India F1 Team in its debut season . Since the 2018 Belgian Grand Prix , it has been competing in the Formula 1 World Championship with material and staff from the insolvent Force India racing team . Racing Point will start under the name Aston Martin in 2021.

history

Emergence

After the racing team Force India, which started with an Indian license, became insolvent in July 2018, the company Racing Point UK Ltd., registered on August 2, 2018, took over . the personnel and material Force India. Racing Point is a group of investors around the Canadian entrepreneur Lawrence Stroll , the father of the racing driver Lance Stroll . The aim was to continue to compete in the Formula 1 World Championship with the Force India technical equipment. Media reports mostly assumed that Lance Stroll, who had driven for the defeated Williams team in 2018 , should be given the opportunity to compete for a more competitive racing team in the future. The family had already proceeded in a similar way in 2014 when they took over the established Formula 3 team Prema , whose drivers won the Formula 3 Euro Series every year from 2012 to 2016 , and used Lance Stroll as a driver there.

Racing Point is not the legal successor to Force India, but is viewed as a newly founded racing team. The FIA accepted Racing Point's announcement on the Thursday before the 2018 Belgian Grand Prix. The Formula 1 World Championship teams unanimously decided that Racing Point could claim the prize money from Force India. However, only the world championship points that Racing Point achieved from the Belgian Grand Prix were taken into account; the points scored by Force India up to the summer break were not taken into account. In addition, the other racing teams decided that the term Force India must remain part of the team name for the rest of the season. Otmar Szafnauer became the new team manager . He took the place of Robert Fernley , who had left Force India when bankruptcy proceedings opened.

2018 season

The team's first race was the Belgian Grand Prix , the 13th race of the 2018 Formula 1 World Championship . Racing Point used the VJM11 chassis that Force India had started with for the remainder of the season . They were powered by Mercedes engines. The cars retained the pink, white, and blue paintwork of the Force India vehicles.

The drivers were the previous Force India pilots Esteban Ocon and Sergio Pérez . Both drivers occupied the second row behind Lewis Hamilton and the eventual winner Sebastian Vettel in Belgium . They finished the race in fifth and sixth. Racing Point thus achieved more points after the first race than its competitor Williams F1, who competed with the same engine, over the course of the entire season. At the end of the season after the ninth Grand Prix for Racing Point, the racing team finished seventh in the constructors' championship.

Season 2019

Lance Stroll during the 2019 Hungarian Grand Prix

In 2019 , the team started under the name Racing Point, and the chassis was also registered under this name. Pérez stayed with the team, Ocon was replaced by Lance Stroll . At the 2019 German Grand Prix , Lance Stroll achieved fourth place, the team's best result to date. At the end of the season, Racing Point was seventh overall with 73 points. Perez was tenth with 52, Stroll 15th with 21 points.

The driver pairing for 2020 is unchanged.

During the preparation for the season, the RP20 caused controversy because of its similarity to the Mercedes-AMG F1 W10 EQ Power + , which won the 2019 Formula 1 World Championship. Following the Grand Prix of Styria , a formal protest was raised against the RP20, which specifically concerned the brake shafts, which according to the regulations must be designed by each team themselves. The FIA seized the RP20's brake ducts and requested those of the W10 to investigate the protest.

In the run-up to the British Grand Prix , Sergio Pérez tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus . He is therefore not allowed to participate in the Grand Prix. The team signed Nico Hülkenberg as a short-term replacement. At the Grand Prix of the 70th anniversary , Hülkenberg replaced Pérez again.

On August 7, 2020, after Renault objected to the team, the FIA stewards imposed a deduction of 15 points and a fine of 400,000 euros because the rear brake shafts of the RP20 were too similar to those of the 2019 Mercedes W10. The penalty only applies to the Styrian Grand Prix; a warning was issued for the remaining races.

Racing Point is currently in fourth place with 66 points in the constructors' championship after the seventh race of the season, taking into account the 15 points deduction.
