Otmar Szafnauer (born August 13, 1964 in Romania ) is the team boss of the Formula 1 racing team Racing Point .

Life

Szafnauer was born in Romania to an American of German descent and a Romanian, but moved to Detroit , Michigan , when he was seven . He received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Wayne State University in Detroit and then his bachelor's degree in economics and finance from the University of Detroit .

Career

He joined Ford Motor Company in 1986 and was named program manager for Ford in the United States. While working for Ford, he attended the Jim Russell Racing Driver School and began racing in Formula Ford in 1991 . He left Ford in 1998 to work as Executive Director of British American Racing in the Formula 1 World Championship . After unsuccessful talks with Jaguar Racing , he was hired by Honda after his return to Formula 1 in 2001 and rose to become Vice President of Honda Racing Developments and a member of the executive board of the Honda F1 team . After leaving Honda in 2008, he founded Soft Pauer. In June 2009, the company released the official Formula 1 timing and track positioning app for the iPhone .

Szafnauer joined Force India in October 2009 , after which the team has shown a steady upward trend. After the racing team finished seventh in the constructors' world championship in 2010, it climbed to sixth place in 2011, 2013 and 2014. In 2015 the team reached fifth and in 2016 and 2017 fourth. Szafnauer's efforts also played a crucial role in securing a long-term agreement on the use of the Mercedes powertrain from 2014.

After Force India went bankrupt in the summer of 2018, Szafnauer became team leader of Racing Point Force India , the company that had taken over the materials and personnel from Force India.

Awards and recognitions

In 2013, Szafnauer was inducted into the USF2000 Hall of Fame in recognition of his racing achievements over the past 20 years.
