Lauma Zušēvica

Lauma Zušēvica (* 3. July 1954 in Cleveland , Ohio as Lauma Lagzdina ) is an American Lutheran clergy. She has been Archbishop of the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church abroad since 2015 .

Zušēvica earned a bachelor's degree from Cleveland State University in 1976 and a master's degree from Yale University in 1980 . In 1978 she was the first woman to be ordained in her church . She first worked in churches in Long Island and Chicago , from 1985 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin . In 1996 she became dean , in 2005 she became director of the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church in America , the largest regional division of the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church abroad, and one of the vice-presidents of the Church as a whole. She held these positions in addition to serving the Milwaukee community.

In October 2014, Zušēvica was elected by the Synod to succeed Elmārs Ernsts Rozītis as Archbishop and thus spiritual director of the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church abroad. It prevailed against two opposing candidates by a large majority. She was inducted into office on April 19, 2015, and continues to serve from Milwaukee.

Zušēvica has been married to the architect Ivars Zusevics since 1980 and has two grown daughters with him.
