Joseph Crook "Joe" Dawson (born April 19, 1889 in Odon , Indiana ; † June 17, 1946 ) was an American automobile racing driver .

Career

Dawson started three times in the Indianapolis 500 . For the first time at the race's premiere in 1911 when he finished fifth in a Marmon . The following year he won on National ahead of Teddy Tetzlaff ( Fiat ) after Ralph DePalma ( Mercedes ), who led 196 of 200 laps, retired with a technical defect. At the age of 22 years and 323 days he was the youngest winner of the Indianapolis 500 at the time. He was only replaced in 1952 when Troy Ruttman won at the age of 22 years and 86 days. In his last Indianapolis 500, in 1914 , he dropped out after an accident on the 45th lap.
