Adolf Brudes (born October 15, 1899 in Groß Kottulin , Upper Silesia , † November 5, 1986 in Bremen ), often incorrectly referred to as Adolf Brudes von Breslau , was a German motorcycle and car racer .

Career

Brudes began his career in motorcycle races, because from 1924 to 1927 the master mechanic was a works driver for Victoria in Nuremberg. From 1928 he took part in automobile races and in the 1930s he also raced a Bugatti . Among other things, Brudes was involved in the success of BMW at the Mille Miglia in 1940 when he and his partner Ralph Roese finished third in the overall standings on the BMW 328 MM Roadster (prototype) .

After the Second World War , Brudes started out with Veritas and then for the various Borgward brands as a racing and record-breaking driver. In 1951 he set 38 world records in a Goliath racing car. In 1952 he and Hans-Hugo Hartmann set internationally recognized records in the class up to 1.5 l (including 100 km with an average of 215.5 km / h) on the Linas-Montlhéry race track . In the same year he made his only start in the automobile and driver world championships at the German Grand Prix , but had to end the race early due to engine failure.

At the first 1000 km race in 1953 on the Nürburgring , Brudes started with the Borgward No. 37, but had to hand the car over to Bechem / Helfrich early after they had already retired with No. 38 on the first lap. Brudes / Bechem / Helfrich won the class up to 1500 cm³ and came third in the overall ranking. At the Carrera Panamericana of the same year, Adolf Brudes had a serious accident, but got away with relatively minor injuries. In 1954 he was involved in the record drives with the small Lloyd racing car, which with a 350 cc two-stroke engine achieved an average of 120.85 km / h over three hours.

In 1957 he left Borgward and started his own business in Bremen with an NSU agency. Six years later, Brudes retired as a businessman. He continued to drive smaller races; The 69-year-old competed in his last competition in 1968 in an Alfa Romeo Giulia TI. In 1976, Adolf Brudes was seen for the last time at the Nürburgring with his BMW 328 "Mille Miglia".
