The first 1000 km race on the Nürburgring , also ADAC 1000 km race, Nürburgring , took place on August 30, 1953 on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring and was the fifth round of the sports car world championship of that year. It was the prelude to a series of 43 endurance races for the World Sports Car Championship and the Le Mans Series up to 2009. 66 vehicles were registered, 50 of which started the race at Le Mans .

Race course

Works teams were largely absent from the first 1000 km race at the Nürburgring. Ferrari had sent a car, a 375MM Vignale, with which Alberto Ascari / Giuseppe (Nino) Farina won the race. Lancia sent three vehicles that started from positions one, two and five, but failed. Maserati also fielded three cars, neither of which made it to the finish line, and Borgward two.

With a gap of almost 30 minutes on the winner, Bechem / Helfrich in a Borgward Hansa 1500 RS with starting number 37 achieved third place in the overall classification (44 laps or 1003.2 km in 8:50:33 hours = 113.45 km / h ). Bechem / Helfrich had taken over the car from Adolf Brudes after they had retired with start number 38 after the first lap due to an engine failure.

Last in the ranking were two Gutbrod Superior with a 700 cc two-stroke engine and the gasoline direct injection, which was new for gasoline engines at the time, in 25th and 26th place. They drove 37 of 44 laps in 10:34:23 and 10:35:23 hours, respectively corresponded to an average speed of approx. 80 km / h.

One vehicle was not included in the ranking and two were disqualified for unauthorized assistance. 21 cars failed, including the Maserati by Hans Herrmann and the Lancia by Juan Manuel Fangio and Piero Taruffi . Richard von Frankenberg overturned in the Porsche 356 reported by Walter Ringgenberg on the second lap in the Wehrseifen section and fell down a slope after spinning on an oil trail. He was unharmed and was able to free himself from the wreck. The accident of Toni Ulmen / Hermann Roosdorp's Jaguar C-Type was less spectacular .

According to estimates by the journalist Heinz-Ulrich Wieselmann , 8,000-10,000 spectators saw the first 1000 km race at the Nürburgring.
