Roger Laurent (born February 21, 1913 in Liège ; † February 6, 1997 in Uccle ) was a Belgian motorcycle and automobile racer .

Career

Roger Laurent began his motorsport career in motorcycle racing before World War II . In 1937 and 1938 he was the Belgian 350 cc champion on a Velocette . When racing activities resumed after the end of the war in 1947, it was Laurent who won the first Belgian post-war championship titles in both the 350 and 500 categories. In 1948 he defended his 350 cc championship on Norton .

Roger Laurent was a member of Ecurie Belgique as early as the late 1940s and drove their Veritas in national sports car races in Belgium. At the beginning of the 1950s he switched to the monopostos . The successes remained modest, although he was entrusted with the new Ecurie racing car, a Talbot . Only in one race in Albi and a second that ran through the streets of Helsinki with poor participation was he able to win.

In 1952 he made his debut in Formula 1. At the Belgian Grand Prix he drove a works HMW and was classified twelfth. The Ecurie Francorchamps, to which the Ecurie was renamed, acquired a Ferrari 500 in the same year , with which Laurent then showed strong performances. He finished sixth at the Nürburgring at the German Grand Prix , a year later in Chimay and fourth in 1954 in Syracuse .

He showed his skills in the sports car. For Ecurie, which used Jaguar vehicles in the 1950s , he competed in all major sports car races of his time. In 1954 he was fourth in Le Mans and third in the 6-hour race in Reims .

After a serious training accident in Bari in late 1954, he had to skip the entire 1955 season. In 1956 he returned for a year and drove sports car races.
