The Hallein Motor Works Hinterberger, Schreitl & Co. formerly Halleiner engine plant Aktiengesellschaft shortly Hallein Motor Works (HMW) was a manufacturer of bicycle auxiliary engines , mopeds and scooters . The locations were initially in Hallein , but at the end of the 1950s the company moved to Kottingbrunn .
history
Hallein site
It was founded in November 1948 - among others by the engineer Anton Fuchs (born 1907 in St. Pölten, died 1987) - initially as the engine works Fuchs-Königer Aktiengesellschaft Salzburg-Hallein . The search for a suitable site for the production site had already begun beforehand, which was found in mid-1948 with the partially fallow site of the former grill works . At the beginning of 1949, the company was able to move into the previously unused halls.
Some time later, in 1949, due to internal discrepancies, the company was re-established with the company name Halleiner Motorenwerke, Aktiengesellschaft or Halleiner Motorenwerk Aktiengesellschaft. In the course of the following years - at least before June 1957 - the name was changed to Halleiner Motorenwerke Hinterberger, Schreitl & Co. formerly Halleiner Motorenwerk AG .
A total of 107,053 mopeds were produced at the Hallein plant. The last one left the factory in August 1958. In the 1950s, the company was the largest industrial company in the state of Salzburg .
Kottingbrunn location
As a result of the motorcycle boom in the wake of the economic miracle from the beginning to the middle of the 1950s, HMW decided to build a new plant. A suitable area was found in Kottingbrunn in Lower Austria. A large, state-of-the-art plant was built by mid-1958. Housing and social facilities were also part of the plant.
For Kottingbrunn, this move meant 600 fewer unemployed people, HMW was the first large-scale company on the municipality's soil. Associated with the relocation of the company was a large-scale plot of land and development for new settlers. In the following years, further housing estates were created. Around 1,600 (1,300) people were employed at that time.
With the assembly line introduced in the Kottingbrunn plant, production could be increased to two and a half mopeds per fitter, while the daily production in the old Hallein plant was only 13 mopeds. About 60% of the production was exported to almost 30 countries. These included countries in Europe (main export country Holland ), Hawaii, countries in South America as well as in North and South Africa.
During the relocation to Kottingbrunn there was a dramatic drop in sales and thus production, which marked the beginning of the end of the company. Compared to 1956, sales of motorcycles and mopeds in 1960 were only a tenth.
In 1959 there was a new entry, still trading under the name of Halleiner Motorenwerke Hinterberger, Schreitl & Co. formerly Halleiner Motorenwerk Aktiengesellschaft , located in Kottingbrunn, which also moved the company headquarters from Hallein to Kottingbrunn.
HMW vehicles were presented for the last time at the Vienna Spring Fair in 1961. On May 16, 1962, the last of a total of 128,175 HMW mopeds was delivered.
