Ian Macpherson Stewart (born July 15, 1929 in Edinburgh , Scotland , † March 19, 2017 in Crieff , Perthshire , Scotland) was a British racing driver .

Career

Ian Stewart, not related to the Jimmy brothers and three-time Formula 1 world champion Jackie Stewart , began racing on the British Isles in 1951. Initially, a private Jaguar XK 120 was used, with which he competed in national races, especially in England.

Stewart was a founding member of the Scottish racing team Ecurie Ecosse , for which he raced from 1952. Among other things, he won the Jersey Road Race and the Wakefield Trophy in a Jaguar D-Type in the same year .

In 1953 he competed in a Formula 2 - Connaught Type A at the Grand Prix of Great Britain in Silverstone , which was part of the 1953 drivers' world championship . However, after an ignition defect, he had to end the race early. Stewart also took part in some Grands Prix , the results of which were not included in the championship standings. Also in 1953 he and his teammate Roy Salvadori , this time in a Jaguar C-Type , managed to take second place in the 1000 km race at the Nürburgring . At the 24 Hours of Le Mans , he and his partner Peter Whitehead came in fourth.

Stewart's sporting career ended in 1954 in the 1000-kilometer race at the Autódromo Oscar Alfredo Gálvez in Buenos Aires . After a serious accident in the race and the long recovery period that followed, also influenced by his wedding in the same year, Stewart retired from racing in the middle of the season to do farm work in Perth and Kinross , where he lived.
