The Borgward Hansa 1500 sports coupé is a prototype that Borgward-Werke presented at the 1954 Geneva Motor Show. Two or three of these coupés were built, one of which came into the possession of the Swiss Borgward dealer Andre Stauffer in Lausanne after the presentation.

history

At the International Motor Show in Frankfurt (IAA) in March 1953, Borgward presented three coupés with a hand-operated light metal body and a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an output of 80 hp (59 kW). The air scoop on the hood was striking. The car was to be produced in series and sold for 18,000 DM. However, the potential buyers preferred the Porsche 356, which was cheaper by DM 4000, although the Borgward was stronger and faster. So it stayed with the prototypes.

One of the three cars was fitted with a 1.8-liter engine and achieved world best performances of 130.7 km / h over a distance of 5000 km and 5929 km in a time of 48 hours in Montlhéry. Participation in the 24-hour race in Le Mans was a failure: Karl-Heinz Schäufele and Max Nathan's car had an accident before the race, Jacques Poch and Edmond Mouche gave up after an hour of racing with engine failure, and Adolf Brudes / Hans Hugo Hartmann retired due to a lack of fuel.

At the 1954 Geneva Motor Show, Borgward presented two or three prototypes of a new Hansa coupé, depending on the source. With more rounded shapes, this car looked more elegant than its predecessor from 1953. It has a steel body; only the bonnet, doors and dashboard are made of aluminum. Instead of the air scoop, the coupé, like the sedans, has the sleek B-shaped Borgward hood ornament. The interior is made of wood and leather; In contrast, the sliding windows in the doors appear spartan. This model did not go into series production either.

technology

engine and gears

The engine of the sports coupé from 1954 is the water-cooled inline four-cylinder with a displacement of 1498 cm³ of the Borgward Hansa 1500 (bore 72 mm, stroke 92 mm). With two Solex downdraft carburetors 32-PBIC and a compression of 8.5: 1, this engine with overhead valves and side camshaft produces 80 HP (59 kW) at 5200 rpm. The power is transmitted to the rear axle via a single-disc dry clutch and a fully synchronized gearbox. The shift lever, angled backwards, sits directly on the gearbox.

landing gear

The car has a welded tubular frame, independent front suspension on double wishbones with coil springs, and a swing axle with torsion bars at the rear. The foot brake acts hydraulically on four brake drums , which are large compared to the sedan and are ribbed for better cooling ; the handbrake is pulled with a stick on the left under the dashboard. A special feature of the Coupès are the wheels with central locking. The tires have the format 5.50–16.

Performance

According to the factory, the top speed of the Borgward Hansa 1500 sports coupe is 170 km / h. The owner of one of the cars calls for the restored vehicle "approx. 185 km / h ".
