Herbert MacKay-Fraser (born June 23, 1927 in the province of Pernambuco , Brazil according to other information in Connecticut , † July 14, 1957 in Reims , France ) was an American racing driver.

Career

The son of a wealthy American owner of a Brazilian coffee - plantation he was one of many financially independent US boys that are in since the early 1950s, European Motorsport operated.

MacKay-Fraser made his first experiences on the continent at the wheel of his own Ferrari Monza during the sports car race in 1955. In the following years he made his big car control on the Voilant the lightweight Lotus - sports car Colin Chapman from 1956 to 1957 to the test.

As BRM already after the third race of the Formula 1 season in 1957 by the departure Roy Salvadoris to Vanwall had a free cockpit, Herbert was in Rouen-les-Essarts on the recommendation Chapmans his first shot at a real Formula 1 - seater . Already 12th place on the grid was a clean achievement for a rookie , but his lightning start brought him to a surprising sixth place during the first lap of the long course. There he fought with much more highly rated drivers like Harry Schell and Peter Collins on an equal footing. But already after a third of the race distance, his car was hit by a mechanical defect. A drive shaft sheared off, so MacKay-Fraser had to give up. Since his teammate Ron Flockhart also survived a sensational high-speed crash with a lot of luck, BRM once again started one of its typical "pauses for thought".

After this promising debut , many experts expected great achievements from the American. But only a few days later he had a fatal accident at the wheel of a lightweight Lotus Eleven in a Formula 2 anniversary race on the Circuit de Reims-Gueux .

The driver, popular thanks to his big smile and impartial demeanor, was the fourth Formula 1 driver in 1957 to have a fatal accident.
