from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maurice Benoist (born August 19, 1892 in Auffargis , † June 13, 1951 in Paris ) was a French racing car driver and the brother of Robert Benoist .

Career

Like his brother Robert, Maurice Benoist competed in car races in the 1920s and 1930s, but was far less successful. He competed four times in the Le Mans 24-hour race . In 1923 , at the first long-distance race on the Sarthe, he reached 15th place in the overall standings. In 1925 he was no more able to finish the race than in 1929 . He finished the racing event in 1928 in twelfth place overall.

In addition to his appearances at Le Mans, Benoist drove sports car races in France. He was eighth in the Coupe Georges Ballot in 1924 and fourth in the Bol d'Or in 1930. In the same year he won the Morocco Grand Prix .

The betrayal

In his work The Grand Prix Saboteurs , the British author Joe Saward Maurice Benoist claims to have betrayed his brother Robert to the Gestapo in 1943 , which ultimately led to his arrest. However, the British author does not have any sources for making this claim.
