Bugatti Type 30

Bugatti Type 30 is the name of a sports car made by the French car manufacturer Bugatti .

The Type 30 was Bugatti's first mass-produced car with an eight-cylinder engine , displacement 1991 cc. It was the predecessor of the most famous car of this brand, the Bugatti Type 35 “Grand Prix” , which made its racing debut in 1924 at the French Grand Prix in Lyon . Bugatti arrived there with seven vehicles and 45 tons of equipment. The further development of the Type 35 in various versions with and without a compressor won numerous races up to 1930.

Development history

The Type 30 was not only the first Bugatti with eight cylinders, but it also had an engine that became the forerunner of a series of successful 1991 cc racing units of the 1920s and initiated the development of the Type 35. It was also the first Bugatti with four braked wheels. These brakes were operated by cables, although initially experiments were carried out with hydraulics for the front wheels.

The somewhat longer chassis (wheelbase 2850 mm) and the suspension of the Type 30 came from the Type 23 "Brescia" . However, the engine was the first eight-cylinder with three valves per cylinder (two intake valves, one exhaust valve), which were controlled by the camshaft via rocker arms. The Type 30 came onto the market as a sporty touring car. Bugatti, however, also developed racing cars based on the Type 30, so in those years it was often difficult to identify which models should serve which purpose. A total of 600 Type 30s were produced in just four years between 1922 and 1926. Its successor was the Type 38, which was offered with a wheelbase extended to 3120 mm, with an improved engine with the same displacement, as a chassis or as a sporty touring car.
