Joël Gouhier (born October 22, 1949 in Trizay-Coutretot-Saint-Serge ) is a former French racing driver .

Racing career

Joël Gouhier's first racing car was a Renault 8 Gordini , with which he competed in local automobile slaloms in the early 1970s . He contested his first circuit races in the Renault 5 Eurocup and in 1977 won the overall standings of the French Formula Renault championship after five victories this season . In the following two years he finished the championship in second overall; 1978 behind Philippe Alliot and 1979 behind Alain Ferté .

At the beginning of the 1980s he left the monoposto sport and returned to the Renault 5 Eurocup. In 1982 he was the overall winner of the R5 Turbo Eurocup ahead of Massimo Sigala , Jean Ragnotti and Jan Lammers and finished the series as runner-up one year later behind Lammes.

In 1983 he made his debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans as partner of Anne-Charlotte Verney and Vic Elford on a Rondeau M379 . In the 24-hour race in western France he had started six times by the end of his career. He achieved his best position in the final classification in 1986 when he finished second overall with Jesús Pareja and Oscar Larrauri in a Porsche 962C from Brun Motorsport . At the finish line, the trio was eight laps behind the winners Derek Bell , Hans-Joachim Stuck and Al Holbert in the -962C.

In addition to his involvement in sports car races, he drove for many years in various Renault Cup series and for several years drove one of the safety cars at Le Mans. After the end of the 1994 season, he retired from active racing.
