Alex MacDowall (born January 22, 1991 in Carlisle , England ) is a British racing car driver . He will start in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) in 2012 .

Career

MacDowall began his motorsport career in touring car racing in 2005 in the T Cars fall series . In 2006 he completed a season in the T Cars and finished seventh overall. In 2007 MacDowall competed in the British Renault Clio Cup and finished 32nd in the drivers' standings. In the subsequent winter series of this championship he was third with a podium finish. He also took part in two races of the British Seat Cupra Cup that year. In 2008 MacDowall stayed in the British Renault Clio Cup and improved to seventh overall. In the winter series he repeated the third overall placement. In 2009 MacDowall completed his third season in the British Renault Clio Cup. He won four out of twenty races and was runner-up behind Phil Glew with 445 to 561 points . He also took part in some races of the Belgian Renault Clio Cup and the Spanish Seat Leon Supercopa that year.

In 2010 MacDowall received a cockpit in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) at the Chevrolet racing team Silverline Chevrolet operated by the RML Group . While his teammate Jason Plato won the championship title, MacDowall finished the season with a second place as the best result in eleventh place in the drivers' championship. With his first pole position , he became the youngest driver in the series to start a race from pole position. In addition, he completed test drives in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) for Chevrolet that year . In 2011 MacDowall had his second BTCC season for Silverline Chevrolet. A second place was again his best result. In the championship he improved to ninth place. He was beaten within the team again by Plato, who was third.

In 2012 MacDowall moved to the World Touring Car Championship. He is driving a Chevrolet Cruze 1.6T for bamboo engineering in the WTCC . After the second race weekend, he finished eleventh overall.
