Pontiacq-Viellepinte is a French municipality with 184 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Pau and the canton of Pays de Morlaàs et du Montanérès (until 2015: canton of Montaner ).

The name in the Gascognischen language is Pontiac-Vielapinta . The origin of the first part of the name of the municipality is made up of the Latin name Pontius and the suffix -acum , which together means "estate of Pontius". The second part of the name comes from the Latin words villa and pinctea . According to Hubert Dutech, the name refers to a hostel on the way between Beneharnum ( Lescar ) and Vic-en-Bigorre , which was painted red in the Celtic style.

The residents are called Pontiacquais and Pontiacquaises .

history

On June 25, 1844, the municipalities of Pontiacq and viellepinte merged to form the municipality of Pontiacq-viellepinte.

Two mounds on the territory of the former municipality Viellepinte show an early settlement of the land. In the Middle Ages there was a moth in Manchepinte , which was surrounded by wide ditches. In the census of 1385, there were ten households in Pontiacq and fourteen in viellepinte. Pontiacq belonged to the Bailliage of Montaner, vielpinte of Morlaàs . The basic rule of Pontiacq was mentioned since the 14th century in the records. At the beginning of the 18th century it belonged to Jacques de Puyoo. In the Middle Ages, the manorial estate of vielspinte was owned by the de Lons family. It was inherited several times over the centuries until it passed into the hands of François de Lasserre, a citizen of Pau. In the 19th century, the main activity of the Pontiacquais was the production of charcoal . The name of the stream that flows through Pontiacq is characteristic, because Carbouère means " charcoal burner " in German.

Toponyms and mentions of Pontiacq were:

  • Ponteac (1385, census in the Béarn),
  • Pontiac (1750, map by Cassini ),
  • Pontiacq (1793, Notice Communale ),

Attractions

  • Parish church in Pontiacq, dedicated to the Apostle Peter . In the Middle Ages there was already a parish church, which probably dated from the Romanesque . It was completely destroyed in the Huguenot Wars in 1569 by Protestant troops led by Gabriel de Lorges , Count of Montgomery. After the end of the wars, today's church was rebuilt in the 17th century. Its single nave longhouse seemed to be sufficient for the size of the parish at the time. In 1744 the church was restored, as evidenced by the corresponding year engraved on the keystone above the entrance door. Above the entrance portal , the bell gable is interrupted by arcades that contain a small bell. The interior of the church has a small gallery and paneling that was incorporated in the course of a restoration towards the end of the 19th century. Many of the furnishings date from the 18th century and are registered as national cultural assets.
  • Paris parish church, dedicated to Paul of Tarsus . It was built in the 16th century and at that time belonged to the Commandery of the Order of Malta of Caubin and Morlaàs. Their architectural style reflects the transition from Gothic to Renaissance . The single nave nave already shows Renaissance influences, while the pointed arches of the choir show expressions of the traditional Gothic style. Three buttresses on the outside of the apse divert the thrust . Inside, some paintings can be described as "naive", mainly because the works from the late Gothic period do not yet follow the rules of body proportions introduced in the Renaissance. Many of the furnishings date from the 17th and 18th centuries and are registered as national cultural assets.
  • Minvielle Castle. It was built in the 18th century on the foundations of an earlier castle in the district of Pontiacq. The building is believed to be on the site of the Motte Donjon . Their trenches still exist today and surround the castle. The current residential wing has two floors and an attic and is covered with slate . It opens onto an inner courtyard, at the end of which you can see a square tower. The castle is privately owned and is not open to the public.
