history

In the late Middle Ages, Lamayou formed a small association with the villages of Mongaston, Peyraub and Samonzet in order to share the goods and manage them together. A census in 1385 counted 20 households in Mongaston and recorded that the village belonged to the Bailliage of Montaner. Nevertheless, Lamayou probably had a certain independence or supremacy, because there was a mound castle there in the 13th century. In the Middle Ages there was a lay monastery, depending on the Vicomté of Béarn, which existed until 1635. It is said that there was a well that was exclusively reserved for Cagots . These formed a group of people who were discriminated against in Spain and France from the 13th to well into the 19th century and were largely excluded from social life. The registers tell of four or five families who lived in Lamayou since the 18th century. The community of the four villages is dissolved today; the villages of Mongaston, Peyraub and Samonzet are now districts of the municipality of Lamayou.

The current church was built between 1874 and 1876 using building materials from the previous church. Its single-nave nave is equipped with a ribbed vault , its bell tower with a polygonal helmet covered with slate . Some of the furnishings in today's church are from the previous building. The Romanesque chapel was built around the 11th and 12th centuries, during the Huguenot Wars it was looted and damaged by Protestant troops in 1569 , but not destroyed. A series of renovations were carried out in the mid-18th century, during which the roof was replaced in 1737. The year "1773", engraved above the southern entrance, marks the construction of the door and probably the end of activity. In a second restoration project in the 1980s, medieval wall paintings from the 15th century were discovered.
