Serres-Sainte-Marie is a French commune with 562 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Pau and the canton of Artix et Pays de Soubestre (until 2015: canton of Arthez-de-Béarn ).

The name of the municipality is derived from the Gascognischen word sèrra ( German  hill ) and is linked to the geographical location on a hill above the valley of the Gave de Pau .

The Habarnet and Ruisseau l'Agle, tributaries of the Ruisseau Laulouze, also irrigate the municipality.

history

A very large number of barrows discovered in the municipality, most of which have been leveled today, date from the Iron Age and testify to an early settlement of the area. The 1385 census in Béarn counted thirteen households in Serres-Sainte-Marie and the village was part of the Bailliage of Pau. As a result, it benefited from a priory of the diocese of Lescar , which was probably set up there because of the cami salié (salt road) that passed by. Like the neighboring town of Artix, Serres-Sainte-Marie belonged to the Baronate of Gabaston . When the French King Henry IV had his 'royal road' built by Artix, Serres-Sainte-Marie became less important.

Population development

After records began, the population rose to an initial high of around 470 in the middle of the 19th century. In the period that followed, the size of the community stagnated during brief phases of recovery until the 1940s to around 230 inhabitants. Since then, there has been a strong upward trend at times, which is still ongoing today.

Parish church

The village of Serres-Sainte-Marie developed around the Romanesque church from the 10th century . In 1569, during the Huguenot Wars , it was partially damaged by a fire started by Protestant troops. The church, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary , was not restored until 1845 , in which the semicircular apse with its narrow window and the pillars of the choir have been preserved as original Romanesque elements.

The results of the restoration are also new glass windows in pure colors. One of these windows is divided into three sections. The upper and lower with decorative rosettes occupied, while the middle portion in the form of a standing quatrefoil the scene of the temple passage Marias from the apocryphal James Gospel illustrated. Maria, who kneels in front of the priest, is accompanied by her parents Joachim and Anna .

Inside, a pillar can be seen, which is composed of three columns , which are connected in the lower part with a shaft ring and at the top run into a capital . The pillar is partially embedded in the wall and has no load-bearing function. It is believed to be a holdover from the original Church.

The chancel, which is restricted to the clergy, is separated from the nave by a wooden balustrade from the 19th century. It has two doors for access to the choir. During communion, the faithful kneel in front of this balustrade and receive it from the clergyman behind it.

The main altar was created around 1850 to replace the earlier wooden altar that was given to the parish in Herm in 1875 . It is raised on two levels and combines Romanesque and Gothic style elements. In its center is the tabernacle with a door made of gilded bronze in the form of a round arch. Above it rises a canopy supported by columns, which is covered with a helmet . Two paintings frame the reredos .

A church coat of arms adorns one of the interior walls. It is carved out as a relief on a panel , which was probably attached at the time of the restoration. Due to the recognizable bishop's hat and crook , the coat of arms undoubtedly belongs to a bishop whose term of office was probably during the restoration period.

Inside the church there are a large number of statues, most of which date from the 19th century.

  • An angel is shown in a devout posture. He is mostly monochrome except for gold plating on the hem of his coat. He has folded his hands over his chest and tilted his head slightly.
  • Below the wall console on which the statue stands is the alleged coat of arms of Joan of Arc , which she is said to never have worn. Joan of Arc, the French national heroine , is depicted in armor, with a standard and a waved sword.
  • The statue of the Virgin Mary wears a crown, a white dress and a blue cloak with gilt and polychrome trimmings . A snake and an apple from the Garden of Eden can be seen under her feet, symbolizing the victory of the Godhead over the power of evil.
  • The statue of Anthony of Padua rests on a polychrome, neo - Gothic wall console. He wears the habit of a Franciscan and holds the baby Jesus in his arms as an iconographic attribute of saints . This points to the event in which the baby Jesus is said to have appeared to Saint Anthony in one night.
  • The statue of St. Joseph of Nazareth is placed on a column capital on the wall. He carries the baby Jesus on his arm, who carries the globe in his right hand and has raised the left to bless. Josef wears a wide cloak that is completely gilded.
  • The statue of Therese von Lisieux stands on a polychrome wall bracket that is decorated with two angel heads. She wears the habit of a Carmelite woman and holds a crucifix and a bouquet of roses on her chest.
  • Not far from the statue of Therese von Lisieux, Jean-Marie Vianney , known as the pastor of Ars, is depicted. He wears the clothes of a parish priest, an office he held for over 40 years in Ars-sur-Formans in the Ain department . He wears the traditional black cassock , over it a white choir shirt and a purple stole .
